By combining this greater potency with the near instant response of the electric engine, the Camry Hybrid proves particularly vivacious on acceleration. In fact, this “green” car takes a full second less to jump from 0 to 100 km/h than the 4-cylinder Camry!
Like the Ford Fusion Hybrid, the combined power train dispatches power to the front wheels via a continuously variable transmission. The latter substitutes for the typical 6-speed autobox of the other Camrys, in the name of optimal fuel economy.
Simpler options list
The Camry Hybrid can be had for a little over $31,000. On the whole, the list of standard equipment is relatively comprehensive. It includes electric windows, dual-zone climate control, everything you need (including pre-wiring) for satellite radio, seven air bags and a JBL sound system with 6-CD changer, 8 speakers and USB plug.
You also have the choice between two options packages. The first includes an electric glass moon roof, fog lights, lighted sunshade mirrors and rear reading lamps (+ $1,090).
The second includes all that plus heated front seats, partial leather upholstery, a satellite navigation system with reverse camera (very handy considering the limited rear visibility) and the Eco Drive indicator (+ $5,225). Thus outfitted, the Camry Hybrid is slightly more expensive than the high-end Camry XLE V6 model (without the navigation package). Hmmm.
Cocoon-like
On the road, the Camry Hybrid will undoubtedly please motorists that dream of a four-wheel cocoon that’ll get them from A to B with barely any driver input. Driving enthusiasts will definitely want to pass on this one.
Like the millions of other Camrys on the road across the continent, the hybrid shines with its very spacious, silent cabin, its comfortable ride and its smooth transmission. To experience the benefits of increased fuel economy (or a smaller CO2 footprint, depending on how you look at it), though, you have to get used to the ultra-light power steering, which really doesn’t communicate much of anything. On straight highway stretches you constantly have to re-centre the steering – it’s like driving uncle Fern’s 1954 Chevy.
