Last year, the cheapest Jetta was the 2.5L Trendline, priced at $22,175. This year, the lowest-priced version equipped with the 5-cylinder is the 2.5L Comfortline, which costs $1,000 less; it gets the downgrades mentioned above but adds alloy wheels and heated seats. Jetta owners who are thinking of upgrading without losing content or engine power should start shopping at this level.
As for conquest sales, Jetta trims with the base engine are equipped competitively with the Civic, the Mazda3 and the Corolla. The entry-level 2.0L Trendline doesn’t have A/C, but includes power windows and locks, stability control, a 60/40-split folding rear seat and six airbags. In comparison, the $15,990 Civic DX, the $15,995 Mazda3 GX and the $15,460 Corolla CE don’t have a standard stability control system, but otherwise they’re all pretty much the same.
The Jetta 2.0L has two shortcomings. First, and like we mentioned earlier, it isn’t as powerful as its rivals, and second, it isn’t as fuel-efficient. As for the TDI version, it starts in Comfortline trim at $23,875, which is about $600 cheaper than the 2010 equivalent.
So, a Jetta is more affordable than ever, and the compromises are, in our opinion, negligible. We think VW has got something for everyone here; a car that will please loyal customers and newcomers alike.
