With so many new Jettas on the road now, we’ll guess that the car’s styling is a success. Personally, I think it lost its uniqueness and has become too conservative. Upscale trims like the Sportline have a little more flair, but this Trendline+ model, especially in a cloak of Corolla beige paint, could play hide and seek for hours in a Toyota dealer lot.
The new strategy allows VW to price the 2011 Jetta from $15,875 before taxes, freight and delivery charges. That’s even a grand cheaper than the 2009 City Jetta. Our Trendline+ model, with the 6-speed automatic and heated front seats, lists for $18,950.
In comparison, a Honda Civic DX-G costs $19,780, a Mazda3 GX with the Comfort package costs $20,585, a Chevrolet Cruze LS+ costs $20,245, a 2012 Ford Focus SE costs $20,599 and a Toyota Corolla CE with the Enhanced Convenience package costs $19,490. Hey—the Jetta undercuts them all. Oh wait—it’s got that 115-hp engine. Does it matter to you?
Well, some previous-generation Jetta owners might be mad about the changes VW did to their beloved car. If you’re a returning customer, we believe you should skip the 2.0L altogether and start from the $21,175 2.5L Comfortline. Newcomers discovering a VW showroom for the first time, looking for German engineering at a Corolla price, should also find what they’re looking for. We just hope they’re not always in a hurry.
