The 2011 Jetta's cabin is standard Volkswagen fare where design meets execution; the car's dashboard remains one of the most functional and tasteful in any vehicle under $35,000. Great seats, tonnes of room front and back and a huge trunk are all capacious positives for the compact car. Where the German brand abbreviated its expenses is in the selection of materials; gone are the soft-touch plastics. No big loss I guess...
It drives like a Volkswagen
To spend time at the wheel of the new Jetta is to appreciate what the Germans do best; make a fine-driving car. Steering is precise, the brakes are more than sufficient for the task at hand and the new, unique to the Jetta, platform and chassis settings convey comfort and sportiness to the car. As expected, the car feels firmly adhered to the tarmac and the Jetta's new girth has little or no impact on the car's behaviour.
As I was only able to drive an automatic 2.5L Jetta, I can tell you that combo is likely to be very popular and that it will satisfy all but the most demanding performance-wise. The others will need to wait for the 2.0T.
The Jetta is one part of the plan
John White, President and CEO of VW Canada, said that the launch of the new Jetta is the most significant for Volkswagen since the New Beetle arrived for the 1998 model year. Much effort has and will be put into the car as far as promotions and marketing are concerned. Aggressive lease and finance rates will make the Jetta all the more attractive. Given the promotions surrounding the car, VW hopes to deliver 24,000 units in the next year, thus beating their previous record of 22,000 set with the 4th generation car. I bet they can do it.
Volkswagen's plan includes 30 new product launches worldwide this year alone. Closer to home, the Golf Hybrid is coming, the new mid-size sedan will arrive by this time next year as will a new New Beetle and many more. For the time being, the 2011 Jetta lands in dealer lots on September 27th.
