A lot of engine
The TDI engine is what earned the Jetta the AJAC’s Canadian Car of the Year award in the under $35,000 category, namely for its smoothness and fuel efficiency. This is borne out on a day-to-day basis, and the engine proves torquey and versatile no matter the rpm.
Coupled with a lively and efficient six-speed, automatic DSG transmission, the mill happily exerts itself at your command. The transmission is well adapted to the engine, although downshifting could be a little quicker sometimes.
The suspension system is a little too Americanized as well, putting the emphasis on a comfortable ride rather than an inspiring drive. And there’s your glimpse into the Jetta’s new personality. But the spirit of VW hasn’t disappeared altogether, and the Jetta still offers a measure of liveliness. Driving enthusiasts will no doubt be, er, enthused, at the precise steering and gratifying braking performance, traits of all members of the VW family.
On the road
Of course, our tester was the very essence of a Jetta: a worthy little sedan whose capabilities haven’t been affected by its newfound stoutness and brand-new chassis, redesigned specifically for it.
In fact, it takes up exactly where the old Jetta left off, improving on both comfort and style. And beating down the price tag. That’s not nothing! Note, however, that if you’re looking for a sportier model, you’ll have to arm yourself with patience, as the Jetta GLI and its turbo mill won’t be available for another few months. Until then, the all-new Jetta will surely become popular again.
