Something that can also be said of the cargo area, among the smallest in the class. However, it’s easily accessible and the rear bench folds almost flat to boot.
And now for the Sport
When you take a peek beneath the hood, the Tiguan becomes a tall GTI. The 2.0-litre, turbocharged, 4-cylinder mill will indeed be familiar to any GTI driver. Generating 200 hp, it propels the little ute with surprising verve.
Of course, forget about the racetrack with the Tiguan’s weight handicap, but acceleration is frisky and the engine is smooth. The torque band is broad and accessed as early as 1,700 rpm.
The accompanying six-speed autobox with sport mode is lively and precise, quickly and easily changing gears for optimal use of available power.
And when coupled with the 4Motion all-wheel-drive system, the Tiguan takes its utility role very seriously. In normal circumstances the SUV reacts like a simple front-wheel-drive model, but at the slightest hint of slippage or wheel spin it dispatches power to the rear to limit any mishaps.
Though the Tiguan is on the tall side, it still shows a certain talent in terms of handling. The low centre of gravity, compliments of a low-lying engine, the stiff-but-not-too-stiff, sport-tuned suspension and the 18-inch wheels really give the little ute a boost in the agility department.
Conclusion
By definition, sport utility vehicles should have several personalities – but they rarely do.
The Tiguan, on the other hand, is fun to drive, manoeuvrable, fuel-efficient, and all in all spacious enough for its size. The real deal, basically.
