This is not a driver’s car, but then I don’t think it’s meant to be. Chevrolet hasn’t marketed it as such. It’s a car to fit into a young, social urban lifestyle, and in that framework it delivers à la max.
This is, of course, an affordable American vehicle, so some concessions had to be made: the seats could be more comfortable and the back seat is a little snug in the hatch as is cargo space. But when lined up against its main competition, the Sonic really does shine on all counts (horsepower, technology, design, safety, price), so there really is very little to complain about.
So, what do rustic, rural Quebec towns have to do with the new Chevrolet Sonic? Well, there’s my theory. GM and Chevy are steeped in history. Be it good or bad, this American car company carries some serious baggage with them on a daily basis and that baggage sits in the trunk of every new car they release. Being an American car company, and one of the Big Three, is kind of a big deal (to steal a line from somewhere...), and Chevy knows this.
The Sonic, and the drive we went on, sent us full circle. We went from modern to rustic back to modern and it seems that this is the message Chevy is trying to send to its clients as well. They’re in the game for real this time. They’ve embraced the latest technologies, they’ve integrated the features and amenities normally not found on subcompact vehicles and they’ve proven that they’ve emerged from their dark ages renewed and ready to fight.
Kudos to you Chevy and the Sonic; it truly is an affordable, spunky subcompact I believe we’ll be seeing on the roads for years to come.
