Amid dancers, confetti and giant screens at an external press conference, Toyota unveiled with much fanfare the completely redesigned 2012 Camry via the web. We can look forward to more grunt, less refuelling stops and a slightly cheaper price tag.

Maintaining the same proportions as the outgoing model, the latest mid-size sedan promises a quieter, more spacious cabin offering greater visibility.

A 2.5-litre, four-cylinder mill putting down 178 hp and 170 lb-ft of torque should produce less noise and vibrations in the base models, while a 3.5-litre V6 generating 268 hp and 248 lb-ft will power the better equipped models.

Fuel consumption is estimated at 7.0 L / 100 km for the former and 8.2 L for the latter.

The Hybrid Synergy Drive of the all new hybrid version also received its share of tweaking, and it’ll now call on a 2.5-litre four-banger that, combined with the electric engine, will produce 200 hp, offer the best fuel-efficiency rating of its class and have a range of 965 km.

Ten airbags and the STAR safety system will be delivered standard in the 2012 Camry, while the new Entune infotainment system will be making its debut. Judging by the short video presented at the press conference, buyers are looking at nothing more or less than the Ford SYNC on steroids.

Canadian pricing hasn’t been announced yet; the first deliveries are slated for October.
