Hamilton noted that this new Fusion eschews the “three-box” design of its midsize competitors, by stretching out the cabin area, which also gave the car more interior room. “This allows us to have more flowing lines, much faster A-pillars, a sportier cabin profile, and better aerodynamics.”

Some Fusion configurations are purported to have a Cd factor under 0.27. Helping the aero cause are underbody shields developed in partnership with Reynard, the racecar builder.

Quiet and athletic
Ford’s goal to impart the new Fusion with a premium feel and aura, pointed them to concentrate on building a very quiet automobile. Among the quiet-enabling technologies are a complete hood perimeter seal, acoustic material on the underbody shields, and a new multi-link rear suspension said to be “comparable to Audi and BMW” for its ability to deliver both athletic handling and a comfortable and NVH-free ride.

Hybrid models can also be ordered with a noise cancellation system, which works much like noise cancelling headphones designed for air travel.

Fusion’s road-handling cause is said to be furthered by its stiffer platform, and new Electric Power Assist Steering (EPAS) specifically tuned for an engaging driving experience. The new EPAS system can also now compensate for such items as cross winds, and the loss of a wheel balancing weight.

More features to ponder
The interior goes upscale, with lots of seat stitching, accents, soft-to-the-touch materials, and ambient LED lighting. The “pass through” centre console features long stretches of cool-blue LED lights to echo the flowing lines of the exterior. Seat fabric is constructed of recycled materials.

Ford MyTouch with SYNC has been made easier to use, via screens with larger text, by touch sensitive areas that are more clearly defined as touch sensitive areas (i.e. they look like buttons), and through faster computing speeds.

There are also new driver assistance and convenience features, made possible by a system of sensors, cameras, and radar. They include: Lane Keeping; Adaptive Cruise Control; Active Park Assist; and Blind Spot Information System (BLIS).

The 2013 Ford Fusion will be on sale later this year.
