With a $160,000 investment, 27 mechanical engineering students from the Université de Sherbrooke have managed to transform a Volkswagen Golf GTI into a 100% electric vehicle perfectly suited to Canadian road and weather conditions.

It took them two years to optimize the car’s aerodynamic properties and to build a 350-volt engine into the GTI, as well as a new automated transmission, batteries and heating system that can be used in extreme cold.

The prototype is completely operational, and the students plan on crossing the country with the Golf GTI, a.k.a Projet Phoebus, this winter to test its capabilities.

Kudos for their commitment and know-how!
