Two well-respected and generall very well informed motorsport web sites, autoracing1.com and grandprix.com, announced this morning that Canadian driver Bruno Spengler could be a serious candidate to the replacement of Fernando Alonso at McLaren.

This is not as silly as it may seems.

Quebec's Spengler is one name that has been quietly mentioned as a possible F1 driver for some months now and he could be one of the outsiders in the running for the McLaren drive, although it is highly unlikely that the team would sign up the Canadian youngster before seeing him test.

The 24-year old Canadian finished twice runner-yup in the hotly contested DTM series as a driver of the Mercedes squad. His name was first mentioned in connection with F1 in the summer when there was talk that he would be one of the drivers of the planned Prodrive F1 team. Spengler also tested the McLaren F1 simulator in Woking this past summer and did very well.

Spengler is managed by Didier Coton, the man who managed the careers of Mika Hakkinen and Olivier Panis. A big star with the fans in Germany, he speaks English, French and German fluently.

The Canadian who be a perfect fit, as he would not create waves at McLaren the way Alonso did this past season. Spengler also fits another important requirement. Last weekend during the Stars & Cars event in Stuttgart, Mercedes Motorsport' patron Norbert Haug declared to the press that the new McLaren driver "needed to be quick... and inexpensive".
