Swiss-based EVTEC's Mobile Fast Charger may prove the perfect solution to eliminate range anxiety, one of the main reasons given by consumers for not buying electric vehicles.

The device offers owners of the 2012 Mitsubishi i-MiEV and Nissan LEAF a way to charge their cars up to six times faster than the level 2, 240V, 16A on-board chargers installed in the car.

However, if you thought you could throw it in the trunk just in case of an emergency, you'll be disappointed. The unit isn’t designed for domestic applications, either, since it can operate only where a 400-volt, three-phase power supply is located.

What's the deal, then?

Parking garages, car dealerships, racetracks and even large-scale events could all use the Mobile Fast Charger, which retails for €14,900 ($20,820).

While expensive, the system could become very popular among these customers by eliminating the need to install a fixed charging station, which costs even more.

The unit will reportedly be available as a smaller, 10-kilowatt rapid charger as well, which should provide an intermediate solution for those who cannot afford the pricier version.

The technology may not be suitable for commuters yet, but all signs point to EV generators coming to market sooner than later – solving a driver's biggest fear: not reaching their destination.
