Have you ever driven an Italian SUV?

Fans of Italian design, rejoice: The 2018 Alfa Romeo Stelvio, an all-new midsize luxury crossover first unveiled in a world premiere in Los Angeles last fall, will be available in Canada starting this summer. We now know the pricing for the two versions that will be offered to consumers here: $52,995 for the base model, and $54,995 for the Ti.

Bearing a name inspired by one of the world’s best driving roads, the Stelvio pass in the Italian Alps, the latest addition to the Alfa Romeo lineup promises to make its mark particularly with the sporty driving experience it delivers thanks to near-perfect front-back weight distribution and to a mechanical set-up that is among the most powerful and performance-minded in its category.

The 2018 Stelvio comes with a standard 2.0L direct-injection turbo engine generating up to 280 hp and 306 lb-ft of torque, which is wedded to an 8-speed automatic transmission (with steering wheel-mounted aluminum paddle shifters available as an added option). The powertrain is rounded out by the Q4 all-wheel drive system and a drive mode selector. All of that working together can take the Stelvio from a stop to 100 km/h in only 5.5 seconds.

Additional equipment that will interest Canadian buyers include a remote starter, bi-xenon headlamps, power liftgate, 18-inch wheels, leather upholstery, heated front seats and steering wheel – this latter, by the way, is flat-bottomed F1-style – a 7-inch active-matrix screen display and quite a bit more.

The Ti version of the Stelvio adds 19-inch wheels, genuine wood interior accents, a widescreen infotainment system (8.8-inch screen), a 3D navigation system and SiriusXM satellite radio.

Both versions are available with Sport packages costing $2,500 and that upgrade the styling and the driving experience. Those opting for the Ti can also choose a Lusso package ($3,250), which further boosts the luxury and refinement factor in the cabin, notably through an accrued presence of high-end materials.

Wondering about the third version of the model promised by Alfa Romeo, the 505-hp Stelvio Quadrifoglio? The one that can go from 0-100 km/h in under 4 seconds? Its on-sale date and pricing will be announced later this year.
