It took a while for VW’s strategists to understand the specifics of the North American market. Volkswagen's first two SUVs - the Touareg and the first-generation Tiguan - were not adapted to North America and the preferences of its motorists. The former was a more-affordable Porsche Cayenne (but still too expensive for its target buyers), and the latter was too small for the needs of young families on this continent.

The Atlas, on the other hand, is competitive in the segment, as well as being as large as its competitors. What's more, all-wheel drive is now standard on the Atlas or even the Atlas Cross Sport.
