Japanese automaker Mazda has always been apt to do things its own way, but in recent years one consequence of that is that it has been slow to get involved in the move to electric mobility. That might be because its lineup of gasoline-powered vehicles have generally been more fuel-efficient than those coming out of U.S. and German factories, but at some point Mazda likely realized it might have taken a wrong turn, and now it is trying to catch up.

That is evident in the brand’s first all-electric offering for North America, especially when you look at the maximum range of the MX-30, which climbs to only 161 km according to the Canadian EnerGuide. Still, for those who stick mainly to urban centres for their driving, the vervy, dynamic small SUV certainly an intriguing choice.
