Hard on theheels of the A6 sedan's arrival in dealerships, Audi has released details ofthe Avant station wagon version of its mid-sized offering.

Not surprisingly,Audi thinks a great deal of its new wagon , saying that it ''represents aunique blend of design and dynamism, driving pleasure and functionality. Withcountless innovations, a high standard of comfort and luxurious equipment, theA6 Avant is poised to extend its lead within its competitive field.''

Even more thanthat, Audi says, with its ''advanced suspension design and very rigidbodyshell, the A6 opens up new horizons in driving dynamics.''

Perhaps thatwill be helpful in Germany, but at legal speeds in Canadaand the U.S.it's not likely to make much of a difference; that's for sure the case with theA6 sedan.

What worksnotably better on the wagon than the sedan is the vivid new front look thatAudi has given its cars for the rest of the decade at least. Thanks to thedynamic roofline, the Avant is also much more stylish from all perspectives. Itis indeed a fine looking vehicle.

It's also afairly large car by European standards, since it's 4,930 mm long, 1,860 mm wideand 1,460 mm high, but in North America itwill probably do best at hauling four people.

As a stationwagon, it's the A6's securing concept that makes the car interesting, since ithas a larger number of configurations that can keep most standard items fromflying around in event of a crash. This is a major safety consideration usuallyignored by companies and consumers alike.

Audi is widelyknown as being a benchmark company in interior design, and that works againstthe German firm here because it's hard to improve that much on something thatwas good in the first place.

The intent with the high, wide centre console withcontrols and switches ''within perfect reach'' is supposed to emphasize the ''sportyinterior architecture that integrates the driver as the central player.''

A joint cover atthe top connects the instrument cluster and the upper part of the centreconsole, which is turned slightly towards the driver, to form one common unit.

Even yourluggage is meant to go business class, says Audi, thanks to the materials andfinish of the luggage compartment and by that securing concept.

A6 Avant modelshave two securing rails recessed into the floor of the cargo area, which arefitted with four sliding, adjustable and lockable lashing eyes in total which, along with the luggage net fitted as standard, can be used to secure individualitems of luggage of almost any size.

The load areafloor can also be folded up as a standard feature and can be locked in avariety of positions to divide up the load area. This not only allows morescope for stowing objects between the rear backrest and the raised floor toprevent them from sliding around, but also provides access to the lower loadarea, into which a large plastic tray (which makes it easy to clean) isintegrated.

An optionaltelescopic rod can be attached to both rails to divide up the luggage compartmentdiagonally or horizontally.
