But aside from the high-tech engine, this Audi features several other modifications. To deal with the upgraded engine, the suspension has also been improved. Springs and dampers have been stiffened to reduce body roll, yet the resulting ride is reportedly not teeth gratingly harsh. Also, much like the A2 1.6 FSI, the new A2 1.4 TDI gets rear disc brakes to haul the car to a stop more quickly.

So how much and when? Audi is already taking orders, but the first deliveries will start in November. The price however, is slightly less convincing. Audi wants E19,200 (CAD$29,540; USD$21,800) - steep, but after all it's an Audi not a VW. The premium brand's revered high quality and modern technologies can't be sold cheaply no matter the size of the model.

So why tell a nation that won't get the opportunity to see it let alone drive one? Because this could all change quickly. DaimlerChrysler's 'smart' division is on its way across the Atlantic with a similar sized subcompact, setting the stage for an invasion of micro cars if successful. Mercedes-Benz is considering bringing its versatile A-Class to North America too, while BMW has announced a slightly larger but nevertheless tiny 1-Series.

Audi, never willing to back down from a fight, might see it important to answer its competitors with the A2 if necessary, opening the way for its entry into the North American market.
