According to news posted in Europe on italiaracing.net, German car manufacturer BMW is considering leaving the World Touring Car Championship to join ranks with the German-based DTM and race against Mercedes-Benz and Audi.

BMW is apparently disappointed with the image currently projected by the FIA-sanctioned WTCC. The upscale Bavarian car company is deeply dissatisfied by being constantly beaten by the diesel-powered Seat Leons and the Chevolet Lacettis. It must also be emphasized that since the beginning of the season BMW's Mario Theissen push hard the FIA to try to limit the performance of the Leons.

Switching to the DTM would allow BMW to compete against cars that are in the same market - the Mercedes C-Class and the Audi A4.

Since Opel left the series, the DTM rests on just two manufacturers. The series' organizers would undoubtedly welcome BMW with open arms.
