At the NAIAS in January, BMW hosted the world premiere of its new 6-Series cabriolet but delayed the introduction of the coupe. Well, the wait is now over as the German automaker finally presented the two-door 650i, set to go on sale this fall as a 2012 model.
Under the hood is a 4.4-litre, twin-turbo V8 engine that produces 400 horsepower and 450 lb-ft of torque, allowing 0-100km/h accelerations in 4.9 seconds and a top speed of 250 km/h. BMW will offer buyers the choice of a six-speed manual gearbox or an eight-speed automatic.
The driver can select three different modes (Comfort, Normal and Sport) that alter throttle response, spring rates and shift points. Regenerative braking is also featured.
The 2012 BMW 650i is 39-mm wider and rides on 75-mm longer wheelbase than its predecessor. According to the company, the chassis is lighter and aerodynamics are improved to increase fuel economy. Adaptive LED headlights and 19-inch alloy wheels with reinforced-sidewall tires highlight the exterior changes.
Meanwhile, four people can sit comfortably inside. Top-level materials combine with ultra-lightweight, multi-way adjustable power seats featuring built-in seat belts to enhance the driving experience. In the back, the 460-litre trunk is massive for a car of this size.
With regard to technology, the 650i houses a modern iDrive infotainment system with 10.2-inch LCD control screen. A newly-improved head-up display system is also available to help drivers keep their eyes on the road.
Various BMW ConnectedDrive assistance systems and mobility services complete the package along with a nine-speaker stereo that can be replaced by a model-specific premium Bang & Olufsen unit.
Pricing will be announced closer to launch.
