Just months after production of the last-generation BMW Z4 ended, the popular roadster has been updated, redesigned, and sent to Detroit to bow in front of NAIAS showgowers.

BMW Z4 sDrive35i

The 2009 Z4 will boast the longest wheelbase in its class, as well as a folding aluminum top that opens and closes in just 20 seconds. Power will come from a pair of inline six-cylinder engines--topping out with a 300-horsepower punch delivered by a pair of turbochargers and direct-injection technology.

Both the naturally-aspirated BMW Z4 sDrive30i and the turbocharged Z4 sDrive35i come with a six-speed manual gearbox, while a seven-speed Double Clutch Transmission (DCT) is available as an option on the latter. A regular six-speed automatic comprises the optional gearbox in the sDrive30i model.

BMW will include Dynamic Drive Control as standard equipment, allowing drivers to engage three progressively sportier stages depending on their mood and intentions. With a simple button press, the Z4's steering, transmission, throttle and even suspension can be altered for optimized performance.

The 2009 Z4 also marks the first application of BMW's iDrive system in the roadster.

Those around the Z4's stage commented on the more cohesive and dynamic look to the car's sculpted lines, as well as the gorgeous two-tone interior. The Z4 was joined by the updated 3-Series, the diesel-powered BMW X5 xDrive35d and other new models from the German manufacturer.

Expect the second-generation Z4 to land at dealerships this spring.
