Infiniti G37 Convertible debuts the new Bose Open Air Sound System. Its major claim to fame is that the system automatically adjusts itself to sound better during top-down motoring. The system springs into action when the top goes down and also processes two other inputs: outside noise and vehicle speed. A cabin microphone monitors the outside noise.

A Bose processor called, Auto Pilot 2.0, adjusts the stereo's sound (top up or top down) by automatically optimizing the settings on the equalization unit.

The other major components of the Open Air Sound System are special speakers mounted in the front headrests (two in each headrest). There are 13 speakers in total.

"We really wanted to make this an inspiring vehicle to drive with the top down notes Ian Forsyth, Nissan Canada's Product Planning Manager. "We want to encourage people to drive and enjoy this vehicle with the top down ... this audio system is one of the ways of doing that." He added that another onboard "encourager" is the Adaptive Dual Control System, that adjusts the HVAC fan speed in accordance to top position and vehicle speed, and Climate-Controlled seats that provide both heating and cooling functions on the Premier Edition.

The Open Air System is standard on both G37 Convertible models (Sport and Premier). With the exception of the headrest speakers, the stereo is pretty much the same high-end unit found in all G variants, and includes such features as 24-bit 96KHz Burr Brown Digital Analog Converter (DAC), AM/FM/CD/MP3 player, Radio Data System (RDS), centre console-mounted auxiliary input, 7-inch display, and XM Satellite Radio.

If you opt for the Technology Package (optional on sport, standard on Premier), the 6CD in-dash changer gets upgraded to a 9.3GB Music Box Hard Drive.

Bose typically sells its systems to multiple automakers, so versions of this Open Air system may appear on other models down the road. But for now, it's only available on G37 Convertible.
