Following itslaunch at Frankfurt, the BLS will go onto themarket with four turbocharged engines, including one diesel. The 150-hp 1.9-litreinline-four, with common-rail direct injection technology, is fitted with amaintenance-free diesel particulate filter and complies with Euro 4 emissionsstandards.
The range of turbochargedgasoline engines includes two 2-litre inline-fours, one producing 175 hp andthe other 210 hp), and a high-tech 2.8-litre V-6 producing 255 hp withtwin-scroll turbocharger and variable phasing of the intake camshafts.
The BLS offersfive- or six-speed manual transmissions and five- or six-speed automatictransmissions, depending on engine type.
As for theexterior shape of the BLS, it is quite obviously a Cadillac. An internationalteam of designers led by GM's vice president of design Ed Welburn created a vehicle that Welburn says has "clear,sharply defined contours, striking wedge shape and an elegant interior."
The moststriking feature is of course the vertical lines at the front and rear, notesWelburn. "The V-shaped chrome-plated grille, a Cadillac cue, is picked upagain by the trunk lid. The large side faces communicate a sense of strengthand solidity."
The BLS alsofeatures "jewel-like headlamps," fog lamps integrated into thebody-colored bumper, a wide air intake below the grille, and a narrow chromestrip along the lower edge of the side windows.
Welburn says athree-spoke leather steering wheel and an analog clock in the center stack arehighlights of the BLS interior. The circular instruments have white numeralsand red needles on a black background.
Thestate-of-the-art infotainment systems include high-quality audio units, a DVDnavigation system with touchscreen operation, a Bluetooth-enabled cell phone systemwith a hands-free kit, and remote controls on the steering wheel.
The Epsilonchassis has McPherson struts in front and a four-link rear axle and "isdesigned for the powerful engines and the high demands of a premiumvehicle," says Taylor."The chassis tuning ensures dynamic handling performance withoutcompromising comfort."
All in all, it sounds like the kind ofentry-luxury model we could use in Canada.
