Little by little, stiff gas prices and stricter regulations around the world are changing the way vehicles are developed. Cadillac, known for its gas-guzzling products for years, is now toying with the idea of aligning itself with Audi and Mercedes-Benz by offering four-cylinder mills.

If consumers are favourable to the change, it’s highly likely that the new XTS and ATS will be powered by a turbocharged Ecotec engine generating between 220 and 260 hp. Even the next CTS and SRX crossover could receive the same treatment.

The only unknown factor is whether Americans, who despite climbing gas prices are generally still enamoured with frisky V8s, will embrace the idea.

The switch could very well be profitable, as a direct injection, turbocharged, four-cylinder engines can perform as well, if not better, than a V6, while sipping a lot less fuel. Abroad and particularly in Europe, motorists are opting more and more for this type of solution.
