Car-buying seminars for women

Because lots of women don't feel comfortable buying a new car, a female Toronto auto writer is setting up a series of lectures explaining the process.

The first one will take place on Sunday, February 13, in Toronto, with others to be arranged to meet the demand. It costs $50 and will be held in 11:00 a.m. in the board room of the second floor of the Procter and Gamble building at 4711 Yonge St. at 11 a.m.

Krystyna Lagowski created the Quorum Automotive CarWise seminar, and she says it's ''the best place to look for reliable information about cars, how to talk to salespeople, what you need and what you don't need. Plus there's inside information, tips and advice from independent and unbiased car industry professionals.''

Women -- and men, Lagowski points out -- can expect to learn what's legal and illegal, how to understand the sales lingo, their rights as a consumer, and the real costs and prices of new vehicles. Participants will also get a 20-page manual that Lagowski created that will help later in the car buying process.

Lagowski has teamed up with a group of auto industry professionals who learned the business from the other side of the coin, as it were. One of them is David Foster, the president of Quorum Automotive. He says, ''Both men and women can feel intimidated by the car-buying process, but women are at a real disadvantage since the car industry remains a male-oriented, male-dominated business.''

Quorum Automotive's primary business is helping people get a good price on the car they're interested in buying, but they are quick to point out that they have no relationship to any car company or other firm and that they will not try to sell cars at the seminar. It is strictly an information session.

If the seminar participant later decides to use their car-brokering service at a later date, Quorum certainly wouldn't mind, but the two things are not directly related.

Lagowski makes the point that people will not be able to walk into the session on Sunday without advance notice, since the building it's being held in has strict security rules so Quorum has to give them an advance list of participant names.

The building is right across the street from the Sheppard subway stop just north of Highway 401, Lagowski says, for people who don't want to drive.
