To a quite astonishing degree, the chance that someone will try to steal your vehicle varies widely across Canada depending upon where you live.

According to the last official survey by Statistics Canada using the latest Unified Crime Reporting Survey, there are wide variances of auto theft by city, or at least by the country's 27 Census Management Areas (CMAs).

In 2003 there were 171,017 attempts to steal a vehicle in this country reported to the police. For a national population of 31,629,677, that's a rate of 541 thefts per 100,000 people.

From top to bottom, here are the national rankings of those CMAs and their auto theft rate per 100,000 people.
