The Chinese car manufacturer Chery Automobile Company has teamed up with Ricardo in order to create 50 hybrid vehicles that will be used during the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing. These are the first batch, and the vehicles will go into production one month after the Olympics.

For Chery, Ricardo was a logical choice due to their expertise in the field. The Chinese company will design two new vehicles based on its A5 Sedan: the first will feature an idle stop hybrid system powered by a 12-volt alternator/starter combined with a 1.6-litre engine and a 5-speed transmission, while the second will be powered by a 1.3-litre engine coupled with a 151-volt alternator/starter mounted on the crankshaft.

Both technologies will be very fuel efficient. The hybrid versions present distinct advantages over their conventional counterparts with regards to horsepower and torque. For example, the 1.3-litre model produces approximately the same horsepower and torque as the 1.6-litre model, and a 15% decrease in fuel consumption is expected.
