It appears as though the tires made by Hangzhou Zhongce Rubber Co., have an insufficient or missing gum strip. This is an important safety feature that helps prevent tire separation.

The New Jersey tire importer, Foreign Tire Sales, has asked the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) for support and help in recalling the roughly 450,000 light-truck tires made in China after a fatal accident in the US.

According to The New York Times, the NHTSA requires a full tire recall by Foreign Tire Sales and deems the safety recall to be the importer's responsibility. Foreign Tire Sales has since filed a breach of contract suit against Hangzhou.

Hangzhou Zhongce Rubber Co. states that the company's products have no quality problem and that Foreign Tire Sales is the only distributor in America that seems to have issues with the tires. They add that no other distributor has sued them.

The tires have been sold under the names Westlake, Telluride, Compass and YKS.
