Chrysler yesterday announced that new vehicle powertrain warranties would be bumped from current levels to lifetime. This is an industry first, and a move Chrysler says shows how confident they are in their products.

The warranty covers the cost of parts and labor required to repair affected components--namely the engine, transmission and drive system, and is limited to the original owner or first retail lessee. The lifetime powertrain warranty, additionally, may apply to vehicles already delivered to customers--who are advised to contact their dealers for details and information.

"This new Chrysler Lifetime Powertrain Warranty is a statement of confidence to our customers to the reliability of their powertrain. It's peace-of-mind reassurance for as long as they own the vehicle," said Steven Landry, Executive Vice President of Service and Parts at Chrysler.

He adds: "The new warranty underscores our focus on quality and customer satisfaction. It demonstrates our commitment to customers and the confidence we have in our ability to produce quality, reliable and durable vehicles. That's why we put 'lifetime' on it."

Drivers must have a powertrain inspection performed once every 5 years, within 2 months of the 5-year anniversary. The inspection is free of charge.

The new warranty only applies to the U.S. market, which previously had a shorter powertrain coverage than what Chrysler Canada offers. Diesel vehicles and SRT-badged models are excluded from the lifetime warranty program.
