MONTREAL, QUEBEC – For the third year in a row, Communauto, North America’s oldest car sharing service, is proud to take the Défi Climat challenge launched today by inviting its 20,000 members and employees to contribute in a collective effort.

In fact, the goals of this Quebec-wide awareness campaign directly reflect Communauto’s mission for the past 15 years. The raison d’être of this service is to offer an attractive alternative to car ownership, complementing mass and active transit, in order to reduce dependency on personal cars and thus congestion on public roads, energy consumption and pollution.

According to a 2006 study conducted by engineering consultant Tecsult, one Communauto car replaces eight privately owned vehicles. What’s more, car sharing activities reduced CO2 emissions by 24,000 tons in 2009. Each year since the inauguration of the Défi Climat, around 1,000 Communauto users commit to reducing their greenhouse gas emissions. CO2 emissions were further reduced by 1,464 tons in 2009 thanks to the dedication of Communauto’s members.
