While the models we saw weren't production spec, the engine range has already been announced, with three gasoline variants for world markets and a turbodiesel slated only for Europe.  North Americans get a choice of three four-cylinder engines: a 1.8-litre unit making 140-hp and 125 lb-ft of torque; a 2.0-litre unit making 150-hp and 140 lb-ft of torque; and a 2.4-litre range-topper making 170-hp and 165 lb-ft of torque; not quite GTI or Si territory, but up there with the respectable Corolla XRS and Mazda3 GT. However, I have a feeling this model is the next in line for SRT tuning, and considering what Dodge did with the Neon, transforming it

into the SRT-4, and subsequently the auto industry's wild child, this aluminum block, aluminum header engine and an AWD-ready chassis could have the Caliber SRT-4 creeping up on the WRX STIs and Mitsubishi Evos of the motoring world. World Rally Car series, anyone? That would definitely be a great way to promote Dodge's sporting character on the European stage.

On that note, I reiterate that the Caliber will have available all-wheel drive, which functions primarily as front-wheel drive that redirects torque to the rear wheels as necessary when wheel spin is detected. Better yet, the AWD system also features a predictive algorithm that calculates if conditions are likely to lead to the need for grip at all four corners and engages all four wheels in advance of any slippage. The other big news on the tech front is the available CVT (continuously variable

transmission), which promises 6 to 8 percent fuel savings over a traditional automatic transmission, and will also help performance by keeping the engine revving in its 'sweet spot'.

While details of the Nitro's engine range for production were not announced, the concept version incorporates Chrysler Group's 3.7-litre V6 that produces 210-hp and 235 lb-ft of torque, good for casual acceleration, but nothing to write home about considering its approximate 4,000 pound curb weight. Put an SRT-tuned HEMI in it, though, and this thing could probably match the world-beating Grand Cherokee SRT-8, what will be the reigning fastest production SUV on the planet when it debuts (look for a full road test of this one December 1, 2005).  At the other end of the performance spectrum, the Nitro is built on the Liberty platform, so it will come with off-road credentials. Still, it appears to be more of a city truck with limited towing credentials.
