Though the 2012 SLS AMG roadster’s first official appearance is slated for September 13 at the next Frankfurt Auto Show, Mercedes-Benz has revealed a few juicy details about its 563-hp model, which can reach top speeds of 317 km/h.
The German manufacturer, who is apparently perfectly aware of having lifted the veil on its model to the delight of the automotive paparazzi, worked hard to replace the hard top by a soft one and jettison the now-classic gullwing doors.
At its North American launch at the end of 2011, the car will have inherited larger side skirts, which improve the vehicle’s stiffness and crash resistance as well as make way for the new roof. The latter can fold down while the car is travelling at speeds of up to 51 km/h.
Weighing 243 kg, the body will be slightly heavier than that of the coupe variant (240 kg).
Other than this information, Mercedes-Benz has graciously offered several images of the 2012 SLS AMG roadster to tide us over while it completes a series of tests to ensure the readiness of its product before the official launch and distribution.
