Here's a fact: fitting an alternative-fuel powerplant to a large, heavy and thirsty vehicle increases its fuel economy to a higher level than the same powerplant fitted to a small car.

Perhaps that's why there's such a vast selection of alternatively powered SUV's currently available, or the reason that even more are coming to market in the near future. Regardless, automakers have been working hard to create eco-friendly concept SUV's to show the car-hungry public at this year's North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

The latest such concept from German luxury carmaker Mercedes-Benz is called the GLK Freeside, and it made its debut at the North American International Auto Show today.

Mercedes-Benz Vision GLK TOWNSIDE

This concept has a strong possibility of going on sale, and Mercedes was listening closely to the crowds around its stand at the NAIAS. The concept is geared towards customers wanting a luxurious and capable small SUV that delivers excellent comfort and handling on the road, and renowned capability off of it.

Enhanced power and safety are enabled by some of the latest technologies to come from Mercedes-Benz. A new-age Bluetec four-cylinder diesel engine provides motivation, boasting incredible smoothness, excellent economy and very low emissions. Power is handled by a seven-speed 7G-TRONIC gearbox, while a new 4-Matic AWD system ensures stable power delivery regardless of the terrain.

Aside from its stand-out powertrain, GLK Freeside features a slew of cutting edge safety and convenience features including the PRE-SAFE anticipatory braking and safety system, and an Intelligent Light System (ILS) which can optimize the headlight beam pattern for a variety of different situations.

The standard Mercedes-Benz GLK goes on sale in the near future.
