Chrysler CEO Tom LaSorda announced on July 1st that the Dodge Challenger will return to production.

"We haven't seen this kind of spontaneous, passionate response to a car since we unveiled the Dodge Viper concept in 1989," claimed LaSorda.

Like the concept that rolled on the stage at the Detroit show last January, the new Challenger will host the long hood, short deck, wide stance and 2-door coupe body that distinguished the Challengers of the 1970s. It will appear in 2008 as a 2008 model.

No word on what powertrains will be offered, but the concept was powered by a 425-hp, 6.1L HEMI V8 coupled to a 6-speed manual transmission.

From 1970 to 1974, Dodge sold about 188,600 Challengers.
