Reports in the German press say it is possible David Coulthard is coming out of retirement to race a Mercedes-Benz in the DTM touring car series.

The 38-year-old Scot contested his last grand prix at the end of the 2008 season, having spent nine years with works Mercedes power at McLaren between 1996 and 2004.

German reports said Coulthard expressed an interest in switching to DTM during his visit to the Hockenheim round recently.

"The cars are difficult to drive, but they are great. They look great as well," he said, having recently said he missed the excitement of racing and was considering returning to competition.

"In F1 we talk about double diffusers; these cars look like they have diffusers to a factor of 15!" Coulthard joked. "The technology level is very high.

"I wanted to take a year off to see if I missed racing and to see if there were any options outside of F1."

Said the DTM chief Hans Werner Aufrecht: "I would like to see Coulthard in a DTM car."
