Dr Wolfgang Ullrich, Head of Audi Motorsport, expects BMW to be competitive for its DTM return, despite its lack of experience in the serie.

BMW will make its DTM return following a brand new technical regulation, and will join Mercedes and Audi, which are present in the championship for years. Even if the bavarian brand is discovering the DTM, Dr Ullrich expects the M3 DTM to be competitive already for the opening round of the 2012 season.

"BMW has been very intensively preparing for the DTM for more than a year and, just like Audi and Mercedes-Benz, developed a new car according to new regulations which are the same for everyone," said Dr Ullrich. "In view of the touring car know-how that BMW has gathered in many years of work in the field, we’re expecting to meet with a very strong rival - and that’s exactly our assessment of BMW right from the first race weekend on."

"Naturally, experience gives you a minor advantage," he added. "On the other hand, a brand new entrant may have the benefit of doing certain things in a different way, which may prove to give them a minor advantage. It’ll be very interesting."
