Mike Rockenfeller (Audi) set the pole position at Brands Hatch, while Bruno Spengler (Mercedes) was penalized after a mistake from his HWA Mercedes Team, and will start in 8th position on the grid.
The Audi driver was quicker than local hero Gary Paffett on his C Class Mercedes, while Martin Tomczyk set a great performance as the 2008-spec Audi A4 driver reached the 3rd position at the end of the session, just ahead of Jamie Green’s C Class Mercedes.
Bruno Spengler (Mercedes) was further back in 6th position, before he was penalized for a mistake from his HWA Mercedes team, which put the wrong tires on the Canadian’s car during the second free practice session on Saturday morning. Spengler will end up starting 8th, which makes his mission quite hard for the race, as it remains very difficult to overtake on this circuit.
Furthermore, this mistake cost a lot to Spengler, which is rumoured to leave Mercedes to join BMW at the end of the season…
“Starting eighth on the grid isn’t the end of the world - tomorrow’s race is 98 laps long, and a lot can happen over that distance. Tomorrow is another day and I’ll try to get as close to the front as possible. I’m not concerned about championship positions today - the points aren’t awarded until after the race”.
