Earth Hour is a global initiative that encourages individuals and businesses around the world to turn off their lights for one hour to raise awareness and make a difference in the fight against climate change. It will take place on Saturday, March 29, from 8:00 pm to 9:00 pm. To date, 25 cities around the globe have been designated by World Wildlife Fund as official Earth Hour flagship cities. In Canada, Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto and Vancouver will make this symbolic move for our planet.

A number of companies also confirmed their participation. For one, Hyundai Auto Canada Corp. will turn off the interior lights, brand signage and parking lot lights at its offices in Markham, Ontario, Richmond, British Columbia, Boucherville, Quebec, and Darmouth, Nova Scotia. Meanwhile, employees will participate from home by turning off their lights and encouraging friends and family to do the same.

When Australia decided to get involved in March 2007, the experience led to a 10-percent reduction in energy consumption, which is tantamount to removing 48,000 cars from the road for 60 minutes. Over 30 million people are expected to take part in Earth Hour 2008, about 15 times as many as last year. Do the math!
