A German collector paid CDN$ 127,800 (£80,700) to own Elvis Presley’s Mercedes-Benz 600 limousine. The car was auctioned Monday at Bonhams final automobile sale of the year at Mercedes-Benz World in Surrey, UK.
This powder blue 1970 Mercedes-Benz 600 Saloon Limousine was one of only a handful of cars the ‘King of Rock and Roll’ registered himself. Presley owned it for two years before giving it to a friend named James Leroy Robertson. Ever since, the Elvis Presley fan club attempted to keep the car in the USA, labeling it a ‘national treasure’. In 2005, the club’s efforts failed as the car left North America. Monday, it found another new home this time in Germany.
Other notable sales of this auction include a 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL ‘Gullwing’ Coupe that reached CDN$ 700,000 (£441,500) and a 1913 Rolls-Royce 45/59hp Silver Ghost Open Drive Limousine which sold for CDN$ 664,300 (£419,500).
A collector spent CDN$ 220,115 (£139,000) inclusive of Buyer's Premium for Nick Mason’s 1934 Lagonda M45 Tourer while the 1936 Rolls-Royce Phantom III five passenger limousine coachbuilt by Inskip featured in the film Pan's Labyrinth did not sell. It had been estimated between CDN$ 95,000-110,000.
