This week's edition of British Autosport magazine reveals that some Formula 1 teams are set to request a rules clarification from the FIA about the design of the diffusers on the Williams and Toyota cars.

After several designers questioned the legality of the exhausts of the new Ferrari F60 last week, others think the diffusers of the Toyota-powered Williams FW31 and the Toyota TF109 (photo) are not fully legal.

The two teams are alone in having opted for a different design concept at the rear of the car compared to their rivals.

This component at the rear of the two cars appears to exceed the maximum height of 175 mm at their peak through clever aerodynamic shaping of the rear crash structure.

Both teams are confident that their designs are within the regulations. However, rivals designers have expressed curiosity in the way their diffusers have been shaped - especially because it could give them an advantage in slow speed corners.

As a consequence, several teams are looking at seeking clarification from the FIA about the matter.

Interestingly, no official photos of the Williams and the Toyota showed the rear section of the cars. In fact, the Williams FW31 was positioned in the pit lane with its rear section resting against the garage door so nobody could see that area.
