Nico Rosberg put his Mercedes W02 on top of the timing sheets during the first free practice session held Friday morning at the Gilles Villeneuve circuit in Montreal.
The session was red flagged after Sebastian Vettel crashed his Red Bull RB7 after having completed just eight laps.
Fernando Alonso was second quickest in his Ferrari on this stop-and-go track.
Michael Schumacher completed a long run early this morning and finished the session in third place.
Felipe Massa was fourth in his Ferrari, showing that the Italian team is looking strong for this weekend.
The McLaren duo of Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton took 5th and 6th places, respectively.
