Felipe Massa will not start the Hungarian grand prix on Sunday and is undergoing surgery at Budapest's AEK hospital on Saturday night following his frightening qualifying accident at the Hungaroring

The 28-year-old is currently in a nearby Budapest trauma hospital for checks and treatment for a gash on the face following a scary incident during qualifying.

The left upper front side of Ferrari driver Massa's helmet was struck by a spring that had come loose from the rear suspension of the Brawn car driven by Rubens Barrichello.

Telephoto lens images of the trackside scene show medical staff physically lifting Massa from his Ferrari and damage to the visor of his Schuberth helmet.

The photos also showed injury to his left eye, which was swollen and closed, below the eyebrow.

Ferrari team boss Stefano Domenicali confirmed to Italian television that Massa will not race on Sunday.

Ferrari also revealed that hospital checks showed Massa has a cut on his forehead, "a bone damage of his skull and a brain concussion".

"These conditions need to be operated on after which he will remain under observation in intensive care," the Italian team said in a statement.
