“ We have also been using different tire compounds for the first time and the super soft is very fast on the first lap, but degrades quickly. Meanwhile the medium compound is faster than we thought over the first lap, but certainly more consistent.”

Jarno Trulli did not set a lap time due to the lack of power steering on the new Lotus T128. Under those circumstances, Trulli completed 38 laps, concentrating on checking systems out.

While the trucks now travel south to Jerez de la Frontera, the engineers have a few days to analyse data and prepare a programme for the next four-day test session which gets underway on Thursday February 10.
