Mark Webber gave a clue of Red Bull's pace as he set the fastest time on the first day of the final winter test at Barcelona - though he was only elevated to the top when a time from Sergio Perez of Sauber was deleted for shortcutting the chicane.

The Australian's 1:22.544 was faster than anyone managed in last month's Catalunya test, and it came on a qualifying-style single-lap run this morning.

In the final few minutes of the session it looked like Webber had been beaten by a surprising time from Sauber driver Sergio Perez. But the Mexican's 1:21.176 included a suspect final sector time two seconds quicker than the opposition and was subsequently deleted.

The Red Bull Racing team enjoyed a largely trouble-free outing. It was the first proper test for chassis 02 and the team said everything went according to plan. The team focussed on some short runs in the morning and then longer race-distance type runs in the afternoon.

The McLaren Mercedes team has chosen to run across two separate two-day sessions (Tuesday and Friday with Button; Wednesday and Saturday with Lewis Hamilton).

With Button behind the wheel, the team spent the morning evaluating a number of new parts, including a new-for-2011 front-wing, and conducting pit stop practices with the full race crew. The afternoon’s focus was on longer runs and tire analysis. Button set the second fastest time of the day.
