In the morning session, Massa's teammate, Fernando Alonso, set the quickest time in his Ferrari F2012. Lotus' Romain Grosjean was second quickest ahead of Sergio Pérez in the Sauber, Lewis Hamilton of McLaren, Pastor Maldonado of Williams and Felipe Massa.

The temporary street circuit was indeed slippery and dusty during this first session. Heikki Kovalainen's Caterham Renault engine let go through the tunnel, stopping the session.

Kimi Raikkonen of the Lotus team completed just one installation lap before deciding the Monaco-specific steering wasn't to his liking and decided to have it changed, wiping out the rest of his session.

Rain threatened during the lunch break, so it was crucial to set a good time early before rain came. Jenson Button made the most of the dry conditions and set the fastest time. Fifteen minutes into the session, showers started.

Frenchman Grosjean again showed his good form by finishing second. The Ferrari duo of Massa and Alonso came after ahead of Maldonado, Nico Rosberg of Mercedes and Mark Webber in the best-placed Red Bull.

Championship leader Sebastian Vettel of Red Bull was only 10th quickest, one spot ahead Hamilton. Kimi Raikkonen completed 23 laps in the afternoon and ranked 19th, 3.129 seconds slower than his teammate Grosjean.
