Montreal's Mayor Gérald Tremblay bought this week the necessary equipment (fences, giant screen, etc.) to organise a F1 race in the city from ex-promoter Normand Legault's company.
Groupe Motorisé International (GMI) was the legal owner of most of the equipment used during races at the Gilles-Villeneuve track.
Tremblay hopes the $1.5 million acquisition gives him one more argument to convince Bernie Ecclestone to bring back his circus in town.
"People are not to interpret the recent acquisition as a sign that discussions with the Formula 1 world is going any better or any worst, just as a sign that the city is willing to do what's necessary to convince F1 to come back in town in 2010," said the mayor's spokesman Martin Tremblay to a La Presse.
The equipment now belongs to La Société du Parc Jean-Drapeau and will be accessible for any event taking place on site.
