Formula 1 drivers managed to complete just a handful of laps on a dry track before rain began and ruined the first day of testing at Jerez de la Frontera in Spain on Wednesday.

Driver who went very early during the day were able to set their laps during on dry pavement. Nico Rosberg (Mercedes), Sebastien Buemi (Toro Rosso), Nico Hulkenberg (Williams) and Fernando Alonso (Ferrari) registered each six or seven fast laps before the drizzle started.

The teams then switched to alternative test programme for running in the wet.

Two new cars were in action: the Red Bull Renault RB6 driven by Mark Webber (9th) and the Virgin VR-01 Cosworth driven by Timo Glock (last).

Red Bull Renault

Interestingly, the press release of the Renault team indicates that Robert Kubica will drive tomorrow (instead of Vitaly Petrov), but no specific driver has been scheduled yet for the other two days. Renault reserve driver Ho-Pin Tung is present to replace Petrov if needed.
