Doctor Ceccarelli, who is overseeing Robert Kubica’s recovery, said on Friday that it would be mid-summer before the world of racing knows if and when the Pole is likely to make its come back.

"We'll understand six months after the accident: we need to wait for nature to run its course even though, knowing Robert, we are confident in his recovery strength," the doctor explained.

Kubica is expected to leave the Santa Corona hospital, in Italy, in just over a week. He has been receiving care there since his horrific rally crash in early February.

“Due to his hand, leg, shoulder and elbow [injuries], Robert combines three patients into one," the doctor added. "The leg poses little problem. Robert places the load on the left one and has started to load the other one progressively."

“Still, we have set up a pool of at least four people able to follow him during his daily six to eight hours of workout, and we are getting a special treadmill that allows you to put the load over the right leg only partially.”

Dr Ceccarelli says it will take a full six months after the accident before knowing how well the rebuilding of Kubica’s nerves worked out, hence the mid-summer prediction.
