A Williams spokesman has confirmed that the Grove, UK Formula 1 team based team will not use a KERS system at the season opening Australian grand prix late next month.

But despite reports that the outfit's unique mechanical flywheel technology may not be raced at all until at least mid-year, the spokesman insisted that no decision has been taken about when KERS might be fitted to the Toyota-powered FW31.

Reuters quote him as saying "We're clear that we're not going to be using it in Australia but not clear when we will use it."

The spokesman said Williams believes running without its KERS system is the most competitive option early this season.

"The greatest performance opportunities are currently in the weight distribution, balance and optimizing set-up for the slick tyre," he insisted.
