As the one-week window to lodge an official entry for 2010 opened at midnight on Friday, it emerged that at least two teams sent off their signed and sealed paperwork.

Fittingly to the New York Times, joint principals Peter Windsor and Ken Anderson confirmed that they have applied, accepting the budget cap regime, with the official name Team USF1.

"We'll do whatever we can to make it happen," said F1 chief executive Bernie Ecclestone, who on Thursday sullenly predicted that, amid the row between existing teams and the FIA, not many others would join USF1 in entering for the time being.

But also lodging its paperwork on Friday was Campos Racing, a Spanish F3 team run by former Minardi driver Adrian Campos.

It was earlier believed that the rumoured 'Campos' entry was actually his former GP2 team, now known as Barwa Addax, but that team said in a statement on Thursday that it is "not involved in any project of this kind".

Pau Gasol, a Spanish basketball player for the LA Lakers, and one of the world's richest billionaires Carlos Slim, are involved in Adrian Campos' plans, the sports daily Marca claims.

Spaniard Campos, a former Minardi driver, submitted an official entry on Friday for a budget-capped team named Campos Meta 1. Pedro de la Rosa was mentioned as a possible driver.
