Sebastian Vettel on Saturday took a seventh pole in eight race so far this season. He will lead the European Grand Prix ahead of his Red Bull teammate Mark Webber.
Vettel and Webber proved everyone wrong as this weekend was effectively the first without access to engine mapping – something some teams believed to be the ‘key’ to Red Bull’s qualifying performances.
Lewis Hamilton’s McLaren completed the top-3 with Fernando Alonso and Felipe Massa’s Ferraris separating him from teammate – and Montreal race winner – Jenson Button, in sixth.
The two Mercedes GP car completed the top-8 with Nico Rosberg taking the seventh spot ahead of champion Michael Schumacher.
Nick Heidfeld ran only one lap that he did not complete in Q3 while Adrian Sutil did not even leave the pit, sparing a set of tires. They will start in ninth and tenth respectively.
